(Fatal #1)
My Rating: 4 out of 5
Detective Sergeant Sam Holland of the Washington, D.C., Metro Police needs a big win to salvage her career—and her confidence—after a disastrous investigation. The perfect opportunity arises when Senator John O'Connor is found brutally murdered in his bed, and Sam is assigned to the case. Matters get complicated when Sam has to team up with Nick Cappuano, O'Connor's friend and chief of staff…and the man Sam had a memorable one-night stand with years earlier. Their sexual chemistry still sizzles, and Sam has to fight to stay focused on the case. Sleeping with a material witness is another mistake she can't afford—especially when the bodies keep piling up.
Hotness Rating 3 out of 5
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this book. Fatal Affair offered up everything I want in a romantic suspense. The characters were easy to relate to and sympathetic. I even felt for the Senator's parents and they were severely flawed. They just seemed like real people that make real mistakes and have to deal with the real consequences of their actions. Although, I readily admit the consequences to their actions were extreme. The story was developed and compelling. The murder was horrific, yet believable. I was just sucked into this story from the first chapter and lost lots of sleep since I could not put this book down.
I loved Sam Holland. She was her own worst critic and way too hard on herself. But, in her case it was admirable and not at all annoying. For anyone that is a fan of the In Death series and it's leading detective Eve Dallas you'll totally love Sam Holland. The similarities between these characters are so much alike it's uncanny, yet there are enough differences that you aren't left questioning whether or not this character is an Eve knockoff.
Can I just say I want to find myself a Nick Cappuano? He was the best character in just about every way. Understanding, sexy, smart, brave, loyal. Yep, all of those and more. My heart hurt for him from the moment he found Senator O'Connor dead to when he found out that his best friend had a whole other life that he never shared.
The sparks between this couple never felt forced or unreal whether it be in bed or when they were disagreeing and arguing their side. The supporting characters were just as strong and helped to carry the story as much as our protagonists. I can't wait to read on in this series and learn more from these fantastic personalities that surrounded Nick and Sam.
For me this was a 4 star read
