Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out.
The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy—he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle.
Then...Callie Carpenter comes home.
And knocks him right on his tight end zone.
Back to school...
Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances—that she'd prefer to never speak of again—have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school.
Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers.
Just like old times...
When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance—and then has to stop herself from jumping him.
Good friends are all they can ever be.
Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled—hard—by love.
So this book came out on audio before be released in paperback or ebook format. I've not heard of an author doing that. So kudos to Emma for starting something new. With that being said, let's move on to the book.
I absolutely adored this book. There were so many fabulous aspects to it. The kids, the teachers, their mentality, their language. It was loving, but sarcastic; which is totally me 100%. Not only that the chemistry between our H/h was off the charts. I mean who doesn't love a second chance romance when your characters are still over the moon gaga about each other . And can we discuss her parents? OMG.
Let's start with the students. I would be listening to this in my car, or at home, and literally laugh out loud. when the football players were working with Garret to get out of school to go poo at home, due to performance anxiety at school, but had a turtlehead making its way out, I lost it. I think I had tears running down my face. And yes, I know this sounds crude or gross, but who hasn't seriously gone through that. Or had a kid tell them that same thing. Adult or not, it's hard to keep a straight face. Not only that, the reality of kids and how they view teachers and talk to them was spot on. I don't think Emma could have done a better job of capturing that strange balance between students and teachers, and how ruthless and mean the kids can be to teachers, but also to each other.
Can we now discuss her parents? I mean... HOW.. how do you not laugh out loud when it comes to these two. They were seriously the icing on the cake.
And the heartbreak Emma delivered in this one. Not only for what our H/h go through personally when younger, but the loss they endure together as adults. I had to pause the audio and walk away. I lost it. Anyone who reads or listens to this will know what I'm talking about. And if you've gone through what they went through, YOU KNOW ... you just know.. how hard that is. Oh, Snoopy. But then the kids... and Woody. GAH- THE FEELS!
I know Emma does romcoms. And I know Emma does romance. But holy crap did Emma knock the ball out of the park with this one. Screw that. She's demolished it. This has to be one of the best books I've listened to this year. The narrators were spectacular, the storyline was addicting, and the writing was incredible. Seriously ya'll. One of the best books I've listened to this year. By far.
