❤❤ AMBER TO ASHES by Gail McHugh audioreview ❤❤

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Amber to Ashes (Torn Hearts, #1)From the New York Times bestselling author of Collide and Pulse comes a gritty new novel about a shattered young woman who unexpectedly falls for two best friends as she struggles to overcome the trauma of her tormented childhood.

They were a storm I never saw coming, an unforeseen heartbreak on the edge of a dangerous cliff.

Amber Moretti's life changes in the span of minutes. An orphaned outsider, she is desperate to start fresh the moment she walks onto campus. In the time it takes to cross the university’s dining hall, she meets two men who bring color, air, and light to her darkened world.

They became my addiction, each a needle to my next hit, my high.

Brock Cunningham’s appeal is dizzying, a potent force Amber can’t deny. A green-eyed smooth talker, he instantly attracts Amber. It doesn’t take long for him to consume her every thought, her every breath.

Ryder Ashcroft, a blue-eyed, tattooed, and pierced bad boy, turns Amber off immediately—that is, until he kisses her, stealing a piece of her heart, her soul.

They were as opposite as fire and ice, yet I ached for them equally.

Never knowing she could be broken down in so many unexpectedly beautiful yet petrifying ways, Amber finds herself falling for both men.

Immoral? Maybe. I say undeniable. Uncontained.

But one event changes everything, shattering each of their lives…and Amber isn’t sure she can come back from it.

*audioreview*

I'm left a little speechless with the end of this book. so while I process that, let's discuss the narrator. She had 3 main voices she has to focus on and differentiate between- two male and one female. One with a southern twang, and let be honest, she did a fabulous job. Add in the best friends and the dirty villains and she had her hands full. But again, she does a fabulous job. I think this may be one of the best narrations I've ever heard. now.. moving on to the book.

the first half of this book moved to slow. I get it's all a set up to these complex relationships and buildup of this love triangle. But many many times I almost gave up because it moved too slow. Not only that, you throw in a jealous ex as a villain and that storyline doesn't ever seem to be resolved. It continuously comes back over and over, and believe me, there is already a lot going on with this story, it was something that could have used some closure. We didn't need so much outstanding.

Now back to our lovers. We've got jealous exes, crazy families, psycho business associates, loose ends, and a cliffhanger ending. So with so much going on, it's why I can appreciate the beginning and the build up of the characters and their relationships, sometimes it still felt too slow. Once you hit roughly 50% of the book, it picks up. And when it picks up , it takes off. whew. ..wow. . just.. wow. Gail. Gail. Gail.

If you loved Gail's writing in the Pulse/Collide series you're going to fall in love with her again in the second half of this book. And honestly , she gives us two men to love this time. I flip flops between who I think Amber should pick so much while reading this. I would love Brock, then Ryder, then Brock, then Ryder. Finally I gave up. Each man has his pros and cons, but once you put them both together, it's definitely a night that's hard to recover from for both character and reader. So hot. So damn hot.

Gail has written such a great book here and I know, surprise I loved it because it's a cliffhanger, which surprised me too. it's also why I didn't rate it 5. I hate cliffhangers. but in Gail's defense she has so much going on in this book, it would've been impossible to wrap everything up in one book. But it was just so well done and a lot could also be how much I loved the narrator.
